Findlay-based tire maker Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. and another northwest Ohio firm and a southeast Michigan company have been fined a combined $65,500 for citations of workplace safety violations found during inspections by federal regulators.
The citations by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were made public in the past week, and each company has the ability to contest the findings and the fines.
Cooper Tire faces the largest penalty in the most recent reports, at $38,900. OSHA inspectors found four “serious” category violations and one “repeat” violation.
The violations included employees exposed to falling hazards, failure to ensure a tire press was de-energized before performing servicing activities, and failing to adequately guard a curing press to prevent employees from entering its area during operations.
Ram Construction Services of Livonia, Mich., a company that does building restoration and new construction, was fined $14,000 for three “serious” violations at a job site in Toledo. Violations involved exposing employees to impermissible levels of silica while working on a building project.
Bellevue Manufacturing Co. of Bellevue, Ohio, was fined $12,600 for one “repeat” violation found at its manufacturing operations in Bellevue. The violation was for failing to make sure employees were protected while setting up and performing maintenance on a hydraulic straight-draw press.
