CONSTRUCTION WORKER INJURED

Firefighters pull Jake Haas of Gleason Construction Co. from a 20-foot trench, where he was hit in the head and foot with a 13-foot section of sanitary sewer pipe being lowered into position yesterday during a project in the 3600 block of Beverly Drive in South Toledo,

city and fire officials said. Mr. Haas was in fair condition last night in the Medical College of Ohio Hospitals. The rain-slickened, 15-inch polyvinyl chloride pipe slipped in its cable cradle while being lowered into the trench about 10:45 a.m. One end of the

pipe hit Mr. Haas in the head, then landed on his foot, possibly breaking a toe, officials said. It took crews about 30 minutes to rescue Mr. Haas, who was wearing a hard hat. A spokesman for the company said Mr. Haas has been an employee about seven years.
