Campus notes: St. Francis grad is MAC swimmer of the week

St. Francis DeSales High School graduate Mike Carroll was named Mid-American Conference men's swimmer of the week for the second time after winning three titles in Miami University's meet with Cincinnati on Jan. 15.

Carroll, a senior captain, captured titles in the 100 and 200 breast stroke and swam the second leg of the RedHawks' winning 200 medley relay team. The meet at MU's Nixon Aquatic Center ended in a 150-150 tie. Austin Kosier, a senior RedHawk who prepped at Whitmer, finished fourth in the 100 breast stroke and third in the 200 breast stroke.

Miami entered Saturday's meet at Buffalo with a record of 3-4-1.

Carroll amassed 47 team points at Miami's invitational in December, finishing sixth in the 100 breast stroke and 11th - first overall in the B final - in the 200 breast stroke.

A chemistry-premed major, Carroll has twice been named all MAC, including first-team honors as a sophomore.

Woodmore graduates and University of Michigan throwers Erin and Emily Pendleton finished second and third in the 20-pound weight throw at the Penn State University Northeast Challenge on Jan. 16 at Penn State.

Freshman Erin Pendleton registered a throw of 56-08.50, narrowly falling short of the mark set by UM teammate Ashley Greer, whose toss of 56-09.25 won the event. Emily, a junior captain, submitted a toss of 55-11.25. She finished sixth in shot put with a throw of 44-05.25.

The Wolverines won the Akron Opener Jan. 8 with the Pendletons producing solidly. In the weight throw, Emily finished second and Erin fourth. Emily finished fifth in shot put, two spots ahead of Erin.

Emily is the reigning Big Ten Outdoor discus champ, which preceded a ninth-place finish at the NCAA championships. At Woodmore, the Pendletons combined to claim the last six Ohio Division III discus titles, the first four won by Emily, the last two by Erin.

The Owens Community College women's basketball team won its ninth straight game Jan. 16, trouncing Columbus State 85-59. The Express are 16-2 overall and ranked fifth in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association Division II poll. Notre Dame Academy product Jasmine Blanton ranks 28th nationally in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and Genoa's Brittany Darling is 19th in rebounds, averaging 10.4. Darling's 3.7 blocks per game ranks sixth nationally.

Just four points have kept Owens from being undefeated. The Express dropped an 81-78 decision to Hillsborough Community College on Nov. 15 and were downed 66-65 by Schoolcraft College on Nov. 29.

Springfield graduate Lindsay Main helped Otterbein College open its track season with a win at the Rev. Mike Hout Invitational at Capital University on Jan. 16. Otterbein, a Division III school in Westerville, Ohio, scored 184 points to prevail over a nine-team field. Ohio Wesleyan finished second with 180.833 points.

Main finished fourth in the 500-meter run in 1:25.18, and seventh in the 800 (2:34.43).

She ran the second leg on Otterbein's 1600 B relay, which finished sixth in 4:36.75.
