ABOUT THE TEAM:
Coach: Greg Dempsey, 14th year
Last season: 14-1, 6-1 TRAC
Returning letter winners: 20
Returning starters: Offense 7, defense 4
Schemes: Multiple spread/odd front
Top players: Seniors DeShone Kizer, 6-5, 215, QB; Paul Moses, 5-11, 220, TB-LB; Derich Weiland, 5-9, 180, SB-CB; Zach Harmon, 6-4, 280, C; Marwan Marsenburg, 6-0, 250, OT-DE. Junior Chris Green, 6-1, 220, LB.
Outlook: The Irish enter 2013 riding high off their Division II state championship, and well-stocked for a run at a D-III title this year. Leading the way will be third-year QB Kizer (108-of-179 passing, 1,611 yards, 17 TDs, 2 INT; 63 rushes, 450 yards, 8 TDs), who committed to Notre Dame in June. Other offensive weapons include Moses (84 rushes, 601 yards, 14 TDs) and Weiland (36 catches, 496 yards, 9 TDs). Harmon and Marsenburg anchor the line.
With Moses and other experienced running backs, Central must fill the void left by Amir Edwards (now at Wayne State), who rushed 269 times for 1,777 yards and scored 30 TDs in 2012.
The biggest question mark comes on defense, where only four starters return. Green is one of Ohio’s top linebacking prospects, and will get experienced help on defense from Moses and Weiland.
Central has good team speed, is solid at the skill positions, and should be sound on the offensive line.
“We have a good number of starters and lettermen returning, and we also have some nice players off the JV TRAC championship team,” said Dempsey, 118-36 at Central. “We need to focus on working hard this season, and be ready to get everyone’s best effort every Friday night.”
