Police academy 101

Police recruit Aaron Brzuchalski, right, contorts his face, seemingly determined to carry out the orders of Toledo police Sgt. Mike Gilmore, left, who leads 30 recruits through a regimen of push-ups.

Yesterday was the first day for the 54th class of Toledo Police Academy recruits, 27 of whom are being trained for duty in Toledo. The other three are candidates for the University of Toledo force.

The academy curriculum runs for 25 weeks.
