AMHERST, Ohio — A Toledo charter bus driver was in fair condition Saturday following a multiple vehicle accident on the Ohio Turnpike late Friday that killed a Detroit woman and injured two other people, troopers with the Milan post of the Ohio Highway Patrol said.
Investigators were still sorting out details of the accident, which was reported at 10:28 p.m. Friday in Amherst near the exit for Vermilion. Troopers did not have information on the sequence of the crash, which involved at least six vehicles in the eastbound lanes in Amherst Township in Lorain County.
The injured bus driver, Robert E. Wilburn II of Northwood Avenue, was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland for treatment. No age was available. He was driving a 2007 MCI motor coach for Lakefront Lines Inc. of Brook Park, Ohio.
Troopers said a seventh vehicle may also have been involved. An investigation was under way to determine the chain of events and number of crashes leading to the fatality.
Cynthia Dent, 40, who was driving an SUV, died from injuries suffered in the crash.
A preliminary investigation indicated Ms. Dent’s was the first vehicle to crash.
The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer said initial reports indicated that a car went off the side of the road, hit a guardrail, then careened back onto the highway and crashed into the bus, which was carrying 45 passengers.
Troopers said several other vehicles then crashed into the wreckage.
The bus driver was trapped inside and had to be freed by rescue workers, the newspaper said.
Traffic on the Turnpike was closed eastbound for more than an hour. Amherst is 83 miles east of Toledo.
