Museum takes look back to olden days of 1980s

Technology, clothing, fads put in spotlight

Playing old-school video games or putting on Pat Benatar records may seem out of place at the Wood County Historical Center & Museum, a place where 19th-century furniture and images from the Great Depression are on display.

But those attractions are part of a hands-on exhibit that highlights everything 1980s, from the fads to the technology to the clothes.

The exhibit is expected to run through the end of this year and likely into 2013.

"It was meant to be just kind of a small exhibit," said Michael McMaster, education coordinator. "It's grown because there is so much interest in it."

It could grow further.

The museum is seeking donations of other '80s items such as Izod shirts, 16-oz returnable glass bottles, clothing such as leg warmers and T-shirts, and buttons from bands that were popular in the decade. Potential donors are asked to call 419-352-0967 or email education@woodcountyhistory.org.

Visitors to the exhibit can play an Atari 2600, the system that brought Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and other games from the video arcade into homes, or play real vinyl records on a record player.

"They're not necessarily really old," Mr. McMaster said. "But they are old technology. It's changed so much. Things from the 1980s are foreign to people today."

Those nostalgic for the 1980s or too young to remember it can use a rotary phone or make beaded friendship pins of the kind that were hung on shoes or traded with pals.

"If you didn't have a friend, you can make your own," Mr. McMaster said. "You can come and make and take friendship pins to your heart's delight."

The museum, at 13660 County Home Rd. in Bowling Green, is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Suggested donation is $4 for adults and $1 for students.
