TEMPERANCE — A state tax lien was placed on the business of a candidate running for the Bedford school board for underpayment of $14,257.14 in sales taxes in 2011 and 2012.

The candidate, Todd Bruning, said the underpayment occurred during the first year his business, Todds Guns, was open in Lambertville, and that the back taxes had been paid and the lien removed.

“I did my own taxes then, and I did it wrong,” Mr. Bruning said. “Now I have an accountant. I was put on a payment plan, and everything’s current.”

The Monroe County Clerk’s office said its records showed the tax deficiency and lien remained outstanding, but that the settlement of a tax debt can take some time to be recorded.

Mr. Bruning is looking to replace one of three incumbents on the school board: Lisa Beins-McCaig, Tim Brakel, or Joe Gore. He is the candidate of Citizens for Fiscal Responsibility, a political action committee that was formed to oppose a $70.35-million school district request in May for an extensive upgrade of facilities. Voters strongly rejected the levy in a heavier-than-expected turnout.

Mr. Bruning also opposes the school system’s request for renewal of a 0.5-mill sinking fund levy for building maintenance that will be on Tuesday’s ballot. 

Mike Jacobs, the PAC’s treasurer, said he was aware of the gun store’s tax underpayment and lien. “It was an accounting error. When it was discovered, the taxes were paid,” he said.

He said Mr. Bruning’s supporters have contributed about $4,000 to his school board race so far.
