Paula Hicks-Hudson will be sworn in as Toledo’s next mayor during a ceremony at One Government Center Tuesday.
Ms. Hicks-Hudson, formerly Toledo City Council president became acting mayor when mayor D. Michael Collins suffered a cardiac arrest Feb. 1. Upon his death Friday, Ms. Hicks-Hudson became the mayor according to city charter. She will be sworn in Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Also Tuesday, at 4 p.m., Toledo City Council will present a resolution of recognition to Evelyn Johnson and Andra Crisp for coming to Mayor Collins’ aid after he suffered the cardiac episode while driving home from a news conference and crashed into a utility pole. That ceremony will start that day’s city council meeting.
Ms. Hicks-Hudson, a 63-year-old attorney, has been involved in local politics for nearly 30 years and had been council president since 2013.
She will serve as mayor for at least the next 10 months. After that, either she or a successor will be elected and certified to finish the remaining two years in Mr. Collins’ term.
A Hamilton, Ohio native, Ms. Hicks-Hudson received a bachelor’s degree from Spelman College in Georgia and a master’s degree in communications development from Colorado State University. She received her law degree at the University of Iowa in 1982.
