A 17-year-old Southview High School student has been suspended and faces charges for having a knife at school on Friday.
Police Chief William Rhodus said today that the male student was found with a knife, described as a Tac-Force Speedster Model that measured 8 inches when opened, at about 12:40 p.m. Friday at Southview High School, 7225 Sylvania Ave. Police plan to file charges based on the Safe Schools Act.
Chief Rhodus said charges are pending.
Sylvania School spokesman Nancy Crandell said the student was placed on a 10-day out-of-school suspension Friday and faces possible expulsion.
Chief Rhodus said a student informed the school office about the knife. When the 17-year-old was brought to the office for questioning, he admitted to carrying the knife. He removed the knife from his pocket and was then turned over to the onsite police officer. He was released to his parents that day.
The student told police he used the knife for work and forgot it in his pocket. Chief Rhodus did not have information on the student’s employment.
No one was injured, according to authorities.
This is the first weapon offense at a Sylvania school reported this year. There were several incidents last year in which students brought knives or guns onto school property, in violation of the Safe Schools Act.
Among the incidents last year were a Northview High School student on Oct. 13 who brought a 3-inch knife to school and a Southview student on Oct. 22 who threatened to shoot a classmate and police found a BB gun in his locker. Both students were expelled.
