Six candidates were interviewed by the Lucas County Board of Elections on Monday to fill the board’s top two administrative positions.
The interviews for director and deputy director were conducted in executive session. Four applicants are being considered for the director position; two applied for deputy director.
Seeking to fill the director’s chair are Gina Kaczala, the interim director; Waterville Mayor Lori Brodie; Pam Haynam, a former member of the Sylvania Board of Education, and John Kuhlman, a business consultant. All are Republicans. Seeking appointment to the deputy director’s position are LaVera Scott, who is currently filling the role on an interim basis, and Carrie Russell, a recent University of Toledo law school graduate.
Board members said Monday that even if the interviews produced a clear favorite, a formal appointment would not be made until the results of a background check are received.
Former director Meghan Gallagher and Hans Schnapp, a former board employee who was recently fired, were denied interviews. Both applied for the director’s position; Ms. Gallagher also applied for the deputy director position.
