Several area nonprofits have money coming their way Wednesday when the Toledo Community Foundation will cut checks for nearly $130,000 in matching grants from the 2014 Giving Tuesday campaign.
More than 200 local nonprofits participated in Giving Tuesday, an online philanthropic holiday designated for the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
In 2014, area organizations that registered with the Toledo Community Foundation were also eligible to receive up to $1,000 in matching grants for funds raised on Giving Tuesday.
Of the 141 organizations that applied for the match, 139 qualified to receive a matching donation. The Toledo Community Foundation will issue checks totaling $128,377 on Wednesday. Together, the 141 nonprofits raised more than $393,000 for their respective causes on Dec. 2, 2014, last year’s giving date.
Toledo Community Foundation President Keith Burwell said the community “stepped up in a big way” last year, praising nonprofits for using social media and other online tools for fund-raising, and donors, who gave more last year than ever before on Giving Tuesday.
“We’re thrilled,” he said, adding that the extra money is an especially big boost to smaller organizations. Mr. Burwell said the foundation plans to continue the match offer for this year’s Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1.
