Last weekend’s rains invaded the warehouse of the Lucas County Board of Elections in downtown Toledo and may have damaged voting machines, elections Director Gina Kaczala said today.
Ms. Kaczala said the storage boxes containing 30 to 40 machines were wet from the roof leak that was discovered Monday.
She said the machines will be left untouched for several days to allow any moisture in them to evaporate before they are checked for possible damage.
Ms. Kaczala said rain came through four places in the roof, which has been previously patched. The incident was reported at the elections board’s meeting, and it renewed concern about the board’s efforts to get the Lucas County Commissioners to provide a single facility for the board’s operations.
The board keeps its machines at a warehouse at 546 Southard Ave. downtown, maintains offices in the 3rd and 4th floors of Government Center, uses the 12th floor for its board meetings, and conducts early voting and election counting off-site, most recently at the BTC Building at 1946 N. 13th St.
Board members and administrators for Lucas County were scheduled today to visit the former Lucas County Veterans Services office at 1301 N. Monroe St., as a possible early voting site for upcoming elections because the BTC offices are not going to be large enough to accommodate the 2016 presidential primary and general election. The veterans agency moved three months ago to 2595 Arlington Ave.
The elections office has 1,900 electronic voting machines, and uses 1,500.
