Toledo Zoo welcomes new female monkey

Mei Mei, a Francois’ langur, was born July 24

A baby monkey was born at the Toledo Zoo.

Mei Mei, a female Francois’ langur, was born July 24 to an 18-year old mother and a 19-year-old father, the zoo said in a statement released Thursday. Her name means “little sister” in Chinese.

Mei Mei is the seventh offspring for her mother Ashes and father Dong Poung. The baby langur’s weight and height at birth were not released.

Ashes, at the zoo since 2000, is showing good maternal instincts, zoo officials said.

Francois’ langurs are from Vietnam, southeast China, and central Laos.
