HOYTVILLE, Ohio — A family of five, including three grandchildren, escaped unharmed when their house exploded early Monday, authorities said.
“We thank God,” said Sue Souvenier of Bowling Green, who introduced herself as the aunt of Keith Siferd, whom Wood County records list as a co-owner of the house along with his wife, Christine.
“God is on our side at this point,” Ms. Souvenier said. “If it weren’t for God, they would not have got out of there.”
There were no injuries in the explosion and fire that destroyed the house at 20518 Hancock-Wood County Line Rd. in Jackson Township, according to the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. The fire was reported about 3:30 a.m. and extinguished by about 11:40 a.m., a sheriff’s dispatcher said.
What remained of the house was mostly a charred front wall and part of the roof. A torn and twisted children’s swing and slide set sat close to an intact propane tank.
At least one propane tank on the side of the house remained intact. Debris was scattered for a few hundred yards around the house.
Ms. Souvenier, who came to the scene about 11:30 a.m., said the Siferds lived at the house with their three grandchildren and all were safe at Mr. Siferd’s brother’s house.
Jackson Township-Hoytville Fire Department investigators and investigators from the State Fire Marshal's Office remained at the scene by late morning. Bill Krugh, a fire marshal’s spokesman, said by phone later Monday the cause remains under investigation.
No damage estimate was available. The single-story wood frame house was built in 1992, according to county records.
The blast occurred about 1½ miles south of Hoytville.
