TEMPERANCE — The 125-person Bedford High School marching band walked straight lines to create a tie fighter spaceship from Star Wars with instruments played in unison to perform the franchise’s theme song.
Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park theme songs from the band, along with formations, helped its science-fiction show earn a top score at the Michigan Schools Band and Orchestra Association Marching Band Festival on Monday at Flat Rock High School. This is the second year in a row the band has earned a perfect score.
“We started working on this show in July camp,” band director Cory Meggitt said. “It was great to be honored. They put in hours and hours of work and are very devoted. It’s nice to be appreciated.”
Dundee High School was the only other school to earn all top scores from the three-judge panel. Ten high school marching bands participated in the event.
Along with the tie fighter, Bedford made a formation showing Harry Potter’s Deathly Hallows sign. The band also made small circles for the end of the Lord of the Rings song to represent the rings.
“It was a really good time to play those songs with Star Wars coming out this December and Jurassic Park this summer,” Mr. Meggitt said. “The kids have been asking to play Star Wars and Harry Potter for the last few years.”
Mr. Meggitt said he and associate director Josh Glover thought the performance could be special after the first week of camp.
The band will now prepare for holiday parades in Toledo and Monroe. Mr. Meggitt said the district support helped in their success.
“The district invested money in the program, and the kids wanted to show everyone what they’re able to do and what they’re capable of,” he said. “There were three board members and the superintendent [at the festival]. That means a lot to feel the love and support from the district.”
