Citation expected in attack by 2 dogs

A central Toledo dog owner will be cited after his two dogs attacked and killed a third dog and bit a person Friday.

Toledo police were called at 7:46 a.m. to the 1100 block of Fernwood Avenue, near Martin Luther King, Jr., Academy for Boys. Upon arrival, officers found the two attacking “pit bulls” had been shot by an unidentified person, killing the female and wounding the male.

Police identified Anthony L. Allen, 43, of Fernwood Avenue as the owner of the offending canines. Allen “refused to take responsibility for his animals,” according to the police report.

The report contained no information about the person bitten or the dog killed in the initial attack.

The Lucas County Canine Care & Control removed the two “pit bulls.” Director Julie Lyle said the surviving male is being held on a mandatory 10-day bite quarantine, during which he will receive antibiotics and pain medication for a gunshot wound to the right shoulder.

Ms. Lyle said the owner of the smaller dog that was attacked had been walking her dog when the other two canines charged off their owners’ property. She was bitten somewhere in the melee that killed her pet.

Ms. Lyle said if Allen does not reclaim the male dog, it will be killed at the end of quarantine. She noted Allen will be cited for loose dogs acting dangerously, failure to license his dogs, and possibly also for failure to vaccinate the dogs against rabies.

Patty Mazur, spokesman for Toledo Public Schools, said because of the incident, two security units were on hand at the nearby school as children arrived for the 8:15 a.m. start of classes.

Staff writer Ryan Dunn contributed to this report.
