Evening storms rumble through Toledo area

Night of tornado warnings sees last expire at 9:30 p.m.

A tornado warning for Toledo was allowed to lapse at 8:30 p.m. after being in effect for about an hour, and there are no present tornado warnings after a night of storms rolled through the area.

The last tornado warning, which was issued to Wood County, expired at 9:30 p.m., though another batch of large thunderstorms was crossing the I-75 corridor with the potential to unleash strong winds, heavy rain, and severe thunderstorm warnings.

The entire Toledo area remained under a tornado watch until 11 p.m.

Storm damage to trees, structures, and power lines was reported principally in Henry, Defiance, and Paulding counties as one storm passed near Cecil, Defiance, Napoleon, Liberty Center, and Whitehouse between about 6 and 8 p.m. as it roughly followed U.S. 24 and the Maumee River valley.

Napoleon Fire and Rescue Department responded to two damaged property sites, including a house on Henry County Road 18 and a barn on County Road Q1. The storm damaged an attached garage and leveled a barn, fire Capt. Dave Bowen said.

The captain said there were no injuries.

A KISS concert at the Huntington Center was interrupted when Toledo was placed under a tornado warning, but according to the arena’s box office, the show resumed once the threat had passed.

"Believe it or not — tornado right over our heads at concert. People from street coming into hall. Show has been stopped! #Toledo," band member Gene Simmons tweeted during the warning.

A second dangerous storm rumbled across the countryside south of Toledo after the initial cell passed through.

A tornado warning, the latest in a series for a second large storm, was issued at 8:42 p.m. for much of Wood County until 9:30 p.m. That storm was over Weston, Ohio as of 8:40 p.m. and a funnel cloud was reported nearby at Custar. That storm had produced several tornadoes farther southwest and was reported to be headed northeast at 30 mph.

Farther west, two more tornado warnings were issued after 8 p.m. in Defiance and Paulding counties for neighboring storms because of radar-indicated rotation. While heavy rain was still indicated with those storms, the tornado warnings were dropped shortly before 9 p.m.

National Weather Service teams will examine damage Thursday in Defiance, Henry, Paulding, Putnam, and Van Wert counties. The visits “to survey at least two extensive swaths of damage” will be coordinated with local emergency management officials, the NWS northern Indiana office announced.
