The Coast Guard is investigating how a burned-out motor closed one of the Maumee River’s railroad bridges to vessel traffic for about three days.
Lee Soule, a bridge management specialist at Coast Guard district headquarters in Cleveland, said the breakdown was reported Saturday evening at the CSX Transportation swing bridge that crosses the Maumee just south of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority’s general cargo docks. The bridge’s main motor failed and had to be replaced, he said.
Repairs were finished Tuesday night and the Coast Guard started an investigation.
“We intend to work with CSX on more expedient repairs in the future,” Mr. Soule said.
A railroad spokesman did not address Mr. Soule’s comment. The bridge failure delayed at least two freighters: one already upriver unloading grain at the Mondelez flour mill on Front Street that could not leave Toledo until the bridge opened, and one headed for Toledo.
