As president of the board for the Thomas M. Wernert Center, Brian O’Connor knows first-hand the impact of the facility.
Several years ago, he came to the center seeking help. Now, he’s helping others and guiding the central Toledo facility through an expansion project.
“The Wernert Center helped me stop being isolated in my apartment and be with friends and peers who have mental illnesses as well,” Mr. O’Connor said.
His story is one of many found at the Woodruff Avenue center, and a growing number of those participating in its programs is a reason they’re embarking on an expansion.
Their 12,500-square-foot project will feature a hydroponic garden, a greenhouse, a fountain, a serenity lounge, a recreation room, a computer area, more classrooms, and a new basement.
The project, which has been in the planning stages since 2013, will cost $2.7 million — funded with at least $2.2 million from the Mental Health & Recovery Services Board of Lucas County and $500,000 from the Ohio Mental Health Addiction Services.
Kelly Skinner, executive director, noted the benefits of the expansion.
“We really needed more classrooms because how else will people learn more about mental health issues? The serenity lounge and the garden will also be a great place that our members can go to if they’re feeling stressed,” Ms. Skinner said.
The Wernert Center educates those with mental health issues as well as those who wish to learn more about them. The classes are taught by people who deal with mental health challenges.
Most of the employees and 50 percent of board members have their own mental health issues.
Apart from expanding, they will also be renovating their current building, more specifically their kitchen.
“We want to make our kitchen better because we serve up to 100 people every Friday as part of our ‘Supper Club’ program, and we want to serve even more,” Ms. Skinner said.
Some 600 people come to the center weekly.
The expansion will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday with a groundbreaking ceremony.
