Toledo police and fire crews responded to an underground vault fire Thursday morning on Summit Street.
Summit was closed between Monroe Street and Jefferson Avenue, said Pvt. Sterling Rahe, spokesman for the Toledo Fire & Rescue Department. The vault belongs to Toledo Edison, and its crews were also at the scene evaluating the situation.

Private Rahe said the fire crews received a report Thursday morning that smoke was coming out of a manhole on Summit. Soon after they arrived at the scene, Toledo Edison also arrived at the scene, he said.
Vault fires are dangerous, Private Rahe said, because the pressure underground could increase and it could lead to a buildup of gas or manhole covers blowing off. But crews checked the nearby buildings, and determined that they were clear of gas, he said.
As of 12:23 p.m., Summit Street had reopened in both directions.
