The Toledo Fire and Rescue Department is investigating an early morning blaze that destroyed a vacant house on Macomber Street on Saturday.
Firefighters responded quickly to the blaze at 1521 Macomber St., near Auburn Avenue, after receiving a call at 2:18 a.m. Saturday morning, said Pvt. Sterling Rahe, the department’s spokesman.
The fire destroyed the 1½-story wood frame home and appears “suspicious of nature” because the house was vacant, Mr. Rahe said.
“Crews attempted to make entry, but there were holes cut in the floors,” Mr. Rahe said. “The battalion chief determined it was unsafe for entry.”
Neighbors on one side were evacuated as a precaution against the fire spreading to the adjoining houses. Fire crews monitored the rubble for hot spots after extinguishing the blaze, and the city building department responded to the scene.
Mr. Rahe said any tips about the fire’s cause should be given to Crime Stoppers at 419-255-1111.
