Toledo firefighters found a dead person inside a West Toledo house after responding to a fire call there Saturday afternoon.
The fire at 4034 Garden Park Drive was reported at 2:58 p.m. and the first units arriving five minutes later reported heavy fire in one corner of the building. They also were told by neighbors that a person might be trapped on the second floor, according to a Toledo Fire & Rescue Department statement.
Crews found the deceased victim at 3:13 p.m. and the fire was declared under control at 3:16, the department’s statement said.
Pvt. Sterling Rahe, the fire department’s spokesman, said responding crews reported not hearing any smoke detectors when they entered the building, but it would take an investigation to determine if working detectors had been disabled by the fire. The department urged Toledo residents to check smoke detectors for proper function.
The fire’s cause remained under investigation later Saturday, while the victim’s identity awaited confirmation by the Lucas County Coroner’s Office, Mr. Rahe said.
