A Toledo man died following an early morning fire in his home Tuesday.

Around 5:15 a.m. fire crews responded to a report of a house fire at 1438 Jermain Dr. When they arrived they were greeted by heavy fire on the first floor of the home.

Neighbors told emergency responders the house was occupied, and when firefighters searched the building they found Gerald R. Barnes, 59, dead on a couch in the front room of the home.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
