Historically, this system worked well, and was primarily staffed with dedicated volunteers. This system is not working today, and hasn’t really functioned properly for quite some time because of rising equipment costs, a declining number of volunteers, and a shrinking tax base. These issues have pushed many local fire departments to their limits. To ensure public safety, the state of Ohio must actively incentivize and support the formation of regional fire districts.
