BGSU defeats Hampton with buzzer beater

DETROIT — Demajeo Wiggins tipped in a rebound at the buzzer to give Bowling Green an 81-79 victory Monday against Hampton at the Legends Classic.

Bowling Green (3-2) trailed almost the entire game — the Pirates led by 12 at one point in the second half — and survived a 29-point effort from Hampton guard Jermaine Marrow to earn the win.

Justin Turner scored 21 points to lead BG, while Wiggins added his fifth consecutive double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Antwon Lillard scored 11 points for the Falcons, and Michael Laster and Daeqwon Plowden chipped in 15 and 11 points off the bench, respectively.

Bowling Green's Kadie Hempfling reacts to a 3-pointer by a teammate a win against Marshall this week. Hempfling hit a last-second shot to give the Falcons a win over Robert Morris Saturday.

The Falcons held the lead for just 4:04 against the Pirates (1-3), who made 9 of their 13 3-point attempts in the first half and took a 50-42 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Falcons slowly chipped away and put themselves in position to win the game in the final five minutes.

Turner’s layup with just more than four minutes to play tied the game at 72, and his made shot on BG’s next possession gave the Falcons their first lead since 4-2.

BG led by five with 61 seconds to play before Hampton tied it in the final minute, setting up Wiggins’ tip-in following a BG miss to win the game.
