FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Max Johnson and Brandon Kruse each scored goals late Saturday as the Bowling Green State University ice hockey team shut out the Alaska Nanooks 2-0 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association contest at the Carlson Center.
It’s the third consecutive series the Falcons (16-6-3, 11-5-2-2 WCHA) have split with a league opponent. Bowling Green, ranked No. 9 in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today Division I polls and No. 12 in the Pairwise rankings, still is in second place in the league, five points behind first place Minnesota State (19-6-1, 14-4-0-0).
Johnson registered his 10th goal of the season just 2:56 into the contest on assists by Kruse and Connor McDonald. The defense held up its end of the bargain, and Kruse got the insurance goal, an empty-netter, with 35 seconds remaining in regulation.
Eric Dop improved to 4-2-1 on the season by making 31 saves to register his second career shutout and first in regulation. Alaska (6-16-2, 6-11-1-1) outshot BG by one.
The Falcons host Ferris State for another two-game league series starting at 7:37 p.m. Friday.
