BG hockey slips in third period, falls to Alabama-Huntsville

BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green surrendered three quick goals in the third period to Alabama-Huntsville and lost the opening game of the two-game series 4-2 Friday at Slater Family Ice Arena.

The loss likely will be a costly one for No. 15 Bowling Green (20-9-4) as Huntsville (8-25-2) came into the game ranked 58th out of 60 Division I in the PairWise rankings.

Due to Northern Michigan’s win on Friday, the Falcons dropped to third place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with one game to go.

“As all of us have seen with this team, it’s really, really inconsistent,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said. “I thought we had put it behind us, quite honestly, with the way we played last week at Bemidji and the results, and so on. Obviously, tonight, it’s showed its head again tonight at all three positions.”

After a scoreless first period, Sam Craggs scored on a close-range shot to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead just more than five minutes into the second.

Neither side scored again for the rest of the period, but Huntsville overtook the game in the third with three goals in less than four minutes.

Madison Dunn tied the game at 1, Jesper Ohrvall scored off a rush into the Falcons’ zone, and Hans Gorowsky pounced on a rebound during a power play to force BG into desperation mode.

The Falcons got a goal back when Jacob Dalton, the extra attacker on a delayed penalty, scored on a hard shot from the point at 12 minutes to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Bowling Green consistently kept play in the Chargers’ zone for the rest of regulation, but couldn’t come up with a tying goal, and Huntsville added an empty-net goal.
