SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Bowling Green State University hockey team opened a two-game series at Lake Superior State with a 2-0 win on Friday at the Taffy Abel Arena.
Bowling Green outshot LSSU on goal 11-5 in the first period, but neither team scored.
The Falcons were the first to find the net in the contest, as Max Johnson broke the silence with a power-play goal in the second period. His sixth goal of the season was assisted by Brandon Kruse and Alec Rauhauser.
Rauhauser’s assist was his 13th of the season, and it was his 19th point of the season. Both are team highs.
Bowling Green (12-5-1, 7-3-1-1 WCHA) kept its foot on the gas, outshooting Lake Superior State 17-10 in the second period.
Lake Superior State (5-15-1, 3-9-1-1) committed five penalties through the first two periods, allowing Bowling Green to go on four power-play chances.
The Falcons added an insurance goal in the waning seconds of the game, as Cameron Wright scored on an empty net with nine seconds remaining. That score was his his team-leading 12th of the season.
Bowling Green goaltender Eric Dop stopped all 26 shots fired his way.
The season series between the Falcons and Lakers sits at 2-1 in BGSU’s favor.
The Falcons and Lakers reconvene at LSSU at 7:07 p.m. Saturday. BGSU returns home Dec. 30 to face Miami at 7:30 p.m., at the Slater Family Ice Arena. The Falcons defeated Miami 7-4 in the season opener Oct. 6, in Oxford.
