YPSILANTI, MICH. — The Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team battled back from a 22-point deficit, but was unable to defeat Eastern Michigan on Saturday in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams.
The host Eagles (6-6, 1-0 MAC) won 78-61. Bowling Green falls to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the MAC.
Bowling Green trailed by 22 points in the third quarter, but put together a 22-8 run to get within eight points. After scoring the opening basket of the fourth quarter, Eastern Michigan was able to pull away.
Eastern Michigan had 10 more shot attempts than the Falcons by virtue of a 44-23 rebounding advantage, coupled with 23 BGSU turnovers.
“The difference in the game was the rebounding and taking care of the basketball,” second-year head coach Robyn Fralick said.
“Those are things moving forward that we know we need to do better. Our team’s got really good fight. We’ll fight and battle our way back. But it’s a game of possessions. When you get doubled on the boards and you turn the ball over that much, you make the game really hard.”
Bowling Green’s Caterrion Thompson had a team-high 13 points, and has scored in double figures in 13 consecutive games to open the season.
Angela Perry and Elissa Brett added 12 points apiece for the Falcons.
Bowling Green returns home to host Ball State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
