BGSU says football pro day still on schedule

BOWLING GREEN — For now, pro day at Bowling Green is still on schedule.

A BGSU spokesman said its football program still plans to hold its annual showcase for seniors, scheduled for March 23, provided that National Football League teams allow their scouts to continue traveling.

Much of the sports calendar has been canceled or at least postponed as a precaution against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, and pro days have been no exception. Michigan canceled its pro day on Thursday, and Ohio State followed by postponing its annual event on Friday.

Should the Falcons' pro day go as planned, it will be one of the few local sports events to go ahead as scheduled.

The Falcons' football program was in the midst of spring practice when widespread cancellations and postponements started this week. BG conducted its first spring practice on March 7, practiced twice more this week, but is now on hiatus like every other college sports team.

Next week is BGSU’s scheduled spring break, but Bowling Green suspended in-person classes until April 6, and on Thursday the Mid-American Conference suspended all formal and organized practices until further notice, canceled the remainder of its ongoing seasons, including its men's and women's basketball tournaments, and canceled its spring sports season, including baseball, softball, and track.

The Falcons' hockey season also came to an end Thursday as the Western Collegiate Hockey Association called off the rest of its playoffs. Bowling Green already was in Minnesota to begin a best-of-three series against Bemidji State that was due to begin Friday.

The NCAA also canceled all of its remaining championships, even the ones that stretch beyond the academic year such as the College World Series.

BG originally planned on resuming football practice March 24 and conducting its spring game April 18.

During the time off, the NCAA instituted a policy that coaches cannot recruit off campus or play host to visits, whether official or unofficial.
