Former BGSU quarterback Loy headed to Auburn

Former Bowling Green quarterback Grant Loy will transfer to Auburn.

Loy, a former walk-on who became BGSU’s starting quarterback, announced his decision Wednesday on Twitter. Loy started seven games for the Falcons last season, leading BGSU to one of the biggest upsets of the college football season against Toledo.

“The opportunity to play in the SEC and in a system with coaches that have creative offensive minds is a dream come true,” Loy told 247sports on choosing Auburn.

The redshirt junior will be able to play immediately at Auburn since he graduated from Bowling Green in December. He first confirmed his decision to transfer in December.

The former walk-on earned a scholarship in his second year at Bowling Green. As a junior, Loy appeared in all 12 games. He replaced starter Darius Wade early on in Bowling Green’s game against Notre Dame, and finished 13 of 25 for 106 yards and an interception that came on a Hail Mary pass at the end of the first half. The following week, he started against Toledo and helped the Falcons record a victory over their rivals for the first time since 2009.

In 2019, Loy finished 115-for-204 (56 percent) for 1,137 yards with six touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He tied for the team lead in rushing touchdowns with four and finished third with 427 yards.

According to 247sports, Loy received interest from more than 20 schools after he entered the transfer portal.

His final decision came down to Auburn and Boise State.

“I’m very excited to get to work,” Loy told 247sports. “I feel I have a high ceiling, and I have continued to get better each season.”

Bo Nix is the Auburn starter, but the Tigers did need quarterback depth after back-up Joey Gatewood transferred. Loy, a former Division I basketball recruit, has the athleticism to potentially be used in other ways.
