Longtime Mud Hens announcer Frank Gilhooley dies

Frank Gilhooley, the longtime former announcer for Mud Hens games and a former television sportscaster, died Friday.

Mr. Gilhooley was staying in Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Perrysburg. He was 86.

Mr. Gilhooley broadcast his first Toledo baseball game in 1953. He continued until May of this year. He was sports director for WTVG-TV, Channel 13, for many years, until 1986.

The Mud Hens celebrated “Frank Gilhooley Day” at Fifth Third Field downtown May 16.

Mr. Gilhooley teamed with Jim Weber to broadcast Mud Hens home games on a daily basis from 1986 to 2007. He also broadcast games for the Toledo Sox of the American Association in the 1950s and he was the sports director at WTVG Channel 13.

Mr. Gilhooley was a 1942 graduate of Central Catholic High School, and he played baseball and basketball at the University of Notre Dame.
