Late putback lifts UT women on road

MUNCIE, Ind. — The University of Toledo women’s basketball team hung tough against Ball State and was able to snap a two-game losing streak with a 63-62 road victory Saturday.

The Rockets (16-9, 8-6 MAC) were paced by senior center Kaayla McIntyre’s (Notre Dame Academy) 16 points and five rebounds along with Nakiah Black’s 14 points, who also had five rebounds.

But the biggest points for UT came off a putback with just under five seconds by senior guard Mikaela Boyd off a McIntyre miss to seal the game. Boyd finished with eight points.

“This was a hard-fought team win,” UT coach Tricia Cullop said on the Rockets website. “I thought we defended well and preserved through some foul problems. In the end, Boyd came up with a huge offensive rebound and score like she has done so many times in her UT career.”

For the Cardinals (7-19, 2-12), sophomore forward Oslynn Brown had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

The ending was not without thrills as it appeared for Ball State that Nakeya Penny sank a three-point shot at the final buzzer. But the officials ruled Penny after a review that she did not get the shot off in time.
