AURORA, Ohio — University of Toledo senior Duncan McNeill claimed medalist honors at the Mid-American Conference men’s golf tournament Sunday after the final round at Club Walden was rained out.
McNeill shot 5-under-par 139 over 36 holes, finishing three strokes ahead of Kent State’s Gisli Sveinbergsson. He is the fifth Rockets golfer to earn medalist honors in program history, the first since Ciaran McAleavey won the 2008 tournament.
He also earned an automatic bid into a NCAA regional tournament. He will find out his destination at 9 p.m. Wednesday. It will be televised on Golf Channel. The regional is split into six sites: Pullman, Wash.; Stanford, Calif.; Murrells Inlet, S.C.; Simpsonville, Ky.; Athens, Ga.; and Austin.
As a team, Toledo finished third in the event at 21-over 597, 16 strokes behind Kent State and Eastern Michigan. Kent State claimed the conference’s automatic NCAA regional qualifier spot through a tiebreaker, the cumulative total of non-counting scores.
The tournament was scheduled for 72 holes, but play Friday also was washed out.
