Universities in Ohio register names, mascots so they won't turn up in new .xxx web addresses

CLEVELAND — Universities in Ohio have joined schools nationwide in trying to keep their good names sullied by new, X-rated Internet domain.

The Plain Dealer of Cleveland reports Ohio State, the University of Akron, Oberlin College and other universities in Ohio are trying to lock down web addresses ending in .xxx that would feature school names, mascots and other recognizable branding.

For example, Ohio State wants to register trademarks including "Buckeyes" and "Scarlet and Gray." The University of Akron doesn't want anyone using the slogan "Fear the Roo," pertaining to its kangaroo mascot Zippy.

The organization that administers online domains earlier this year approved .xxx to take its place alongside .com, .gov and the others. Web addresses with the new suffix will be available to the public on Dec. 6.
