John Spitzer, a true gentleman and scholar, celebrated his 91st birthday March 6 in the Spitzer Building, built by his family in 1896. Perhaps it is the fact that he s a Pisces, an astrological sign noted for intuition, that makes him so likable.
Mr. Spitzer, who is still a practicing attorney and has taken the courses required each year to keep his license, comes to the office daily. He also collects the rent in person from tenants in the building.
Of course, there s nothing like starting the day with breakfast, lunch, or dinner at Madison s Bistro on the first floor. The food is fab, and the prices are right.
But last Friday it was a day to lunch at Madison s, then hold court in the arcade with coffee and birthday cake chocolate, of course. The celebration continued later with family and friends. The next day, more birthday cake, but for Mr. Spitzer s dear daughter-in-law, Patrice.

One of the highlights of last month was a bravo to Michael Smith, president and CEO of the Mannik and Smith Group, Inc., who was honored as Toledo s Engineer of the Year by the Society of Professional Engineers and the Technical Society of Toledo.

Attendance at the Practically a Golf Tournament miniature golf event held last month at Westfield Franklin Park mall was lower than usual, but the fun was up to par.
The 21st annual event, which benefits the Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio, has raised about $250,000 over the years. This year s golf winners, who received gift baskets from mall merchants, included players from Fifth Third Bank, Arthur Hills and Associates, and Hawkins Elementary School.
Sally Binardo and Tony Rasczyk are still glowing over the success of the fifth annual Heart & Soul 2009: Caring for Our Community benefit last month in the suites-level lounge at Fifth Third Field. The event netted more than $15,000 and a lot of fun with friends, including the Mud Hens mascot Mudonna, who stopped by even though the baseball season is not here yet. Fabulous food, a silent auction, and the tunes of Ramona Collins and the Toledo School for the Arts jazz trio made for a great time.
Now, on to more parties!
