THE Great Big Night annual fund-raiser for Croswell Opera House in Adrian marked the 50th anniversary of the historic theater being rescued from demolition in the late 1960s.
Attendees gathered in the renovated Adrian Armory Events Center looking festive with florals by Flowers & Such. After dinner by the Hathaway House was the opening night of the Croswell season, West Side Story in Concert. Honored were cast members of the 1968 Adrian High School production of West Side Story. The musical was first shown at the Croswell after it was saved from the wrecking ball. Honorees came from across the country, including from Florida, California, and New Hampshire. A post-performance party followed.
About $25,000 was raised. Bravo to the event committee, Deveny Rosebrock, Jonathan Tobar, Jamie Buechele, Alex Beasecker, Pam Adair, Peter Crist, and others.
Irena Tobar, Jarrod and Michael Del Vecchio, Matt and Megan Hammond, Dave and Shelley Hickman, Kris and Emory Schmidt, and Jeff and Jennifer Danley were among the attendees.
THE Central City Ministries Urban All-American Banquet presented by Mercy at the Renaissance Toledo Downtown Hotel raised about $45,000.
After dinner awards were presented. The Boff Service Award went to the Christ Child Society for keeping the library open throughout the year and tutoring students at Rosary Cathedral Catholic School.
The Urban All-American Achievement Awards were given to Rosary Cathedral Catholic School alumnus Lee Huss, owner of Overhead Door Co., and Stacy Miller, a Central City Ministry of Toledo physical education teacher. Ms. Miller started as a student of St. Adalbert, then taught at St. Hedwig, Queen of Apostles, and Rosary Cathedral. She is also a volunteer basketball and volleyball coach at Queen of Apostles.
Elementary Student Rising Star Awards went to Trinity Alexander, Trinity Crowell, Aris Moody, and Israel Williams of Rosary Cathedral Catholic School, and Demari Montalvo, Ally Ramsey, and Emelian Zapata, of Queen of Apostles.
High School Student Achievement Honor Awards went to Queen of Apostles graduates Osvaldo Ramirez, a junior at St. John’s Jesuit High School, and Guadalupe Zarate, sophomore at Notre Dame Academy. Ray Sanders and Ryan Sanders, Rosary Cathedral Catholic School graduates and juniors at Central Catholic High School, were also honored.
THE inaugural University of Toledo Medical Center medical staff gala was at the Toledo Club in appreciation of the staff’s work and dedication on behalf of patients. UTMC is the former Medical College of Ohio. Guests nibbled lavish hors d’oeuvres and dined on a delicious dinner and decadent desserts at tables centered with UT blue and gold centerpieces by Hafner Florist. Dr. Samer Khouri, chief of staff and Dr. Christopher Cooper, dean of the college of medicine and executive vice president of clinical affairs, were the honorary speakers.
THE UPDATED totals are in for the 17th annual Paw Hoorah a fund-raiser at Toledo Country Club presented by Planned Pethood Inc. More than $65,000 was raised for the nonprofit organization to reduce the overpopulation and suffering of dogs and cats. Volunteers assist the one part-time staff member at Planned Pethood, so almost all the funds go to help the animals.
Dog adoption events are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and June 9 at Petco, 5027 Monroe St. Cat adoption events are from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at PetSmart locations at 5241 Monroe St. and 1459 Spring Meadows Drive.
