BGSU must do better job stopping run game

BOWLING GREEN — Bowling Green State University football coach Mike Jinks knew the Toledo offense his team faced Wednesday was good.

But he still was surprised at how effectively the Rockets ran the ball in a 66-37 whipping at Doyt Perry Stadium.

“I knew Logan [Woodside] would be efficient, and they would make some explosive plays,” Jinks said. “But I thought we would really stop the run better than we did. …

“But not only did they get huge chunks, they kept the ball. The time of possession made a big difference in the game.”

Woodside, the Rockets’ quarterback, was efficient, connecting on 13-of-18 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. But the Falcons’ inability to stop UT’s running game allowed the Rockets to roll for 637 yards of total offense and hold onto the ball for more than 34 minutes in the contest.

Terry Swanson carried the ball 23 times for 192 yards, while Art Thompkins used an 88-yard touchdown run to finish with 114 yards on just nine attempts. And while Shakif Seymour had only 67 yards on 12 carries, he scored five touchdowns.

“There were times where guys were in the holes, and we were unsuccessful [tackling],” Jinks said. “It happened on the second level, and it happened on the third level as well.

“In that game, their guys were better ‘in space’ than our guys were.”

Toledo finished with 389 net rushing yards on 53 carries, and that included a 13-yard loss after a poor snap on a punt. The Rockets’ average of 7.3 yards per rush attempt was troubling, as was the Falcons’ inability to force a single turnover after entering the game among the Football Bowl Subdivision leaders in turnovers, particularly in fumbles forced.

“The emphasis going into the game was on tackling,” Jinks said. “In the Buffalo game, we didn’t do a good job of tackling. We were reaching, trying to create too many turnovers and not making sure we brought the guy down.

“But in this game we didn’t do that, either.”

The Falcons close the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eastern Michigan, and BG will need to solve its defensive problems quickly if it hopes to hold in check an Eagles offense that ranks third in the Mid-American Conference in pass offense with 269.5 yards per game.

“These last two games have probably been our two worst performances of the year from a statistical standpoint,” Jinks said. “We going to need to play better because they have an offense that capable of putting up big numbers.”

SHORT WEEK: The Falcons had just five days after the Toledo game to get ready for the Eagles rather than the normal six. Jinks said he and his coaches have tried to strike a balance between practice and rest, especially this late in the season.

“Right now, you’re not about developing physical or mental toughness,” Jinks said. “It’s about getting their bodies healthy while implementing the game plan.”

INJURY REPORT: The Falcons got generally good news regarding its injured offensive line.

Starting guard Jack Kramer is expected to miss his fourth game, but there is a chance the rest of the linemen might return. Center Tim McAuliffe and guard Clark Clancy were back in practice, although guard Lorenzo Taborn is listed as doubtful for the EMU game.

Freshman linebacker Armani Posey, who did not play against the Rockets, is listed as probable for Tuesday’s game.
