Williams Co. man guilty in case of child burned with cigarette, 'stomped and trampled'

BRYAN — A Williams County man charged with abusing and torturing a 17-month-old girl last year was found guilty Friday of felonious assault and seven counts of endangering children.

Williams County Common Pleas Judge J.T. Stelzer announced his verdicts against Alan K. Laney, 48, of Montpelier following a bench trial last week. The judge acquitted Laney on an additional count of felonious assault and two counts of endangering children.

According to Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, whose office prosecuted the case, Laney burned the child with a cigarette, “stomped and hit her in the face, trampled on her leg, and hit her with a flyswatter. A child should never be subject to that kind of trauma.”

The victim's mother, Alisha M. Underwood, 25, of Hicksville pleaded guilty Dec. 14 to attempted endangering children for failing to protect her child. Both Underwood and Laney are to be sentenced June 6.
