Spotlight athlete: Anna Campos, Waite
Campos, who competes as Waite’s lone swimming and diving team member, will attempt to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s state meet for the fourth consecutive year in 1-meter diving soon.
Last winter, she placed fifth at the district at Bowling Green State University with a score of 405.60, then placed eighth in the Division I state meet with score of 460.60.
As a sophomore in 2015, Campos was the district runner-up with a 454.90, and advanced to the semifinals of the 1-meter state competition before being eliminated.
So far this season, she has a win at the Northwest Classic meet at BGSU. She will begin her quest to repeat as a state placer starting with sectionals Feb. 10 at Napoleon. The district meet is Feb. 14 at BGSU, and the state meet is set for Feb. 23-25 in Canton.
“First off, Anna’s dedication is what sets her apart from any other divers I have worked with,” said her coach, Allison Belcher. “She is really dedicated to the sport, and will do anything I ask. She has confidence in herself, which is important.”
Campos, who has been diving competitively since the age of 8, trains at the St. Francis de Sales High School pool. She has college scholarship offers from Bowling Green, Youngstown State, and Wright State.
