To the editor: Support legal immigration

I believe that most U.S. citizens want immigration, and if someone knocked at the door, explained their problem, and asked for help, we would be more than willing to at least listen and try to help them. But I also think most of us would call the police if someone snuck into our back door.

The problem is not with those who are knocking on the door, but the ones who sneak in the house through the back door, move into the closet and take our food and utilities without asking while hiding from us. They have children and send us their medical, clothing, and education bills. Then after a few years they expect that they should be able to stay in the closet forever.

Some may feel that we allow too many immigrants to apply for entry and appear for their hearings, but no one should have a real complaint with the immigrants. But those that think someone who snuck in or stayed past their visa have the right to stay need to realize that this reduces the opportunities for those that follow the rules.

I support all legal immigrants and visitors, but not those who broke the law and continue to break the law. Support those that do it the right way and do not encourage those that do it the wrong way.

Who should control SNAP?

In order to qualify for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, a person must provide their information in these areas: income, expenses, utilities, how many people live in the residence, bank account info, and all insurances. This information can all be cross checked and verified by the Lucas County Job and Family Services.

I feel if people want to spend their monthly SNAP on less than ideal or nutritious food, they are only hurting themselves and their family. I get under $40 per month and I use that for meal food items. Pre-cut fruit is, first of all, a choice. Secondly, it often goes on sale which is when I buy it. In fact, I buy all of my groceries on sale.

And the problem with screening or enforcing food items bought with SNAP is who will monitor it? The cashiers at the stores? How do the lines get drawn? Who should monitor?

Food is food.
