St. Tim’s to present renowned organist

Scott Hayes to play solo recital at St. Rose Catholic Church

St. Tim’s Discover’s concert series opens 2017 with renowned organist Scott Hayes in a solo recital. A graduate of Ohio Wesleyan and Cedarville universities, he holds his master’s in organ performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. He serves as director of music at All Saints Episcopal Church in Richmond, Va.

Hayes is the tonal designer and voicing specialist for Muller Pipe Organ Co., a local organ builder located in Croton, Ohio. His most recent projects include the reconstruction of the 64-rank Skinner instrument at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio, and the new 54-rank Mueller built for St. Paul the Apostle Church in Westerville, Ohio.

His recital will include selections by J.S. Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude as well as other repertoire aptly suited to the 1873 Garrett House Organ on which the recital will be played. The free concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Rose Catholic Church, 215 E. Front St., Perrysburg. More information is available at 419-874-5704 or saint-timothy.net.

■ Night Session Big Band is performing at the Big Band at the Bay Valentine’s dance event Friday at Maumee Bay State Park, 1400 State Park Blvd., Oregon. Two packages are available: String of Pearls, an elegant meal followed by the dance for $99 per couple, and Moonglow, which includes the meal, dance, and an evening’s lodging for $219 per couple. ■ The Musical Arts Series of Port Clinton presents a free concert of Russian dance and song offered by the Golden Gates Group. The ensemble consists of students from Russia and Georgia. The program will include dance, balalaika and bayan accordion music, and folk songs and tales; it begins at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd., Port Clinton.

■ The Firelands Symphony presents Masterful Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 and one of the piano concertos played by guest artist pianist Nikita Mndoyants, the winner of the 2016 Cleveland International Piano Competition. ■ Toledo-area music legend, organist and harpsichordist Margaret Weber is celebrating her 100th birthday this month. Weber served as organist in a number of churches and taught music theory at the University of Toledo. She was dean of the Toledo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and longtime accompanist for the Toledo Choral Society. She is an active member of the Euterpean Music Club and still composes music and writes poetry.
