Toledo schools, police unveil emergency system

Silent alarm, audio transmission for use in situations such as an active shooter

Toledo officials announced today a radio program with police to protect Toledo Public Schools in case of emergency, such as an active shooter.

School staff will have the ability to press a button that silently alerts dispatchers and transmits audio from a microphone. The school employee can then detail the emergency.

All 54 buildings in the district, including preschools, elementary schools, and high schools, will be equipped with a radio. The program was announced during a news conference today at Chase STEM Academy.

Each radio costs $2,000 to purchase, install, and program. A federal grant covered the fees.

Toledo Police Chief George Kral said this is a lifeline to the police and enhances an already strong partnership with the school district.

“We're very happy this is here. We're dedicated to keeping the kids of this city safe,” Chief Kral said.
