The addition to the sports facilities at Tam O'Shanter are scheduled to open next week, according to Ken Katafias, head of the Sylvania Joint Area Recreation District.
Mr. Katafias said remodeling of the old portion of the building with the new, such as new offices, pro shop, restaurant, and other facilities will be ongoing, but the synthetic turf is down for the indoor soccer field and the basketball court should be ready.
“We have teams and leagues just waiting for us to call and they're ready to go,” he said.
Mr. Katafias pulled up a white strip indicating the goal for soccer, and said all of the lines can be altered for other field sports including lacrosse.
He said when the winter indoor soccer season is over the turf will be rolled up and the area will be available for inline hockey.
The Tam O'Shanter facility, 7060 West Sylvania Ave., has long been known for its ice rinks, and Mr. Katafias pointed out that the expansion and remodeling includes a small rink that can be used for instruction.
A complex of offices will be taken out and a seating area for parents to watch lessons will be built in the area near the center of the building, he said.
“It's exciting. There are very few complexes which have the facilities we can offer to residents,” Mr. Katafias said.
The addition to Tam O'Shanter is connected to the senior center that is under construction, and people using that facility will have direct access to the athletic complex. The senior center should open early next year.
Mr. Katafias said people using the senior center will be able to use the outside of the soccer field as a walking track.
Tam O'Shanter's expansion is 50,000-square-feet, and the senior center is 22,000-square-feet.
The total cost for the project is about $6.3 million.
