Mud Hens debut new helmet stickers at home opener

If fans at Fifth Third Field looked closely at the Mud Hens’ batting helmets on Opening Day, they would have seen something unique.

The team’s traditional “swinging Muddy” logo, which features mascot Muddy the Mud Hen swinging a bat with a block capital “T” in the background, was a raised sticker instead of being flat against the helmet’s shell.

The result was a three-dimensional effect, mimicking the feature that first became the rage at the major-league level last season.

“They seemed to really become popular during the World Series last year, and we’ve seen them popping up for different teams recently,” said Joe Sarkisian, Toledo’s home clubhouse manager, of the raised logo sticker.

Sarkisian and his staff spent part of their morning Thursday adding the new logos to the team’s batting helmets.

“We got them just in time to put them on the helmets for the Home Opener,” he said. “We thought they are good-looking stickers, so let’s get them on the helmets for the Home Opener.”
