Toledo Artists' Club launches online juried exhibition

The Toledo Artists’ Club is kicking off its first online juried art exhibition this month that will feature pieces from the community.

The Artist’s Choice Show opens online Feb. 15, and will stay up through April 15. Artists who are participating in the exhibition did not have to be members of the club, which was established in 1943 and is housed in a studio inside Toledo Botanical Garden.

The exhibition will feature work from 43 different artists, who submitted 109 entries.

The show has pieces from a variety of mediums, and will be juried by Ed Kennedy, a Michigan artist whose work has been recognized by organizations such as the Pastel Society of America and the International Association of Pastel Societies.

The Family Art Club will be available from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., every Saturday, in the museum’s classrooms, 2445 Monroe St.

The sessions are 45 minutes long, and are free, but require advance registration at tickets.toledomuseum.org so that safety guidelines can be followed.

Other online and some in-person classes continue through the drudgery of winter and the pandemic. Some of those include:

■ The Anthony Wayne Area Arts Commission is offering a Whimsical Rosettes carryout class. Anyone 7 years old and older can sign up for this class to make an artistic flower arrangement in which students will watch a video by paper craft instructor Mary Willets of Paper Garden by Min.

Kits with all materials including a vase, are $15, and can be mailed for an additional $5 or picked up at Third Street Blooms, 122 Mechanic St., Waterville.

For more information, go to awaac.org/classes-1.

■ Local artist Mary Jane Erard is offering a two-session online class in painting your pet portrait with Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night background.

The class will be in a Zoom format, and will be at 1:30 p.m., Feb. 28 and again at that time on March 7.

The class is mixed media that includes pastel paints and watercolors.

For more information or to register, go to bit.ly/39BbXak.

Erard has also partnered with Articipate Art Studio for a five-week Zoom class that focuses on multimedia with soft and oil pastel.

The online course will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m., on Feb. 13, 20, 27 and March 6 and 13.

Class Fee is $130 for the five-week class. To register, go to articipate.as.me/?appointmentType=19266168.

■ Kids can sign up to learn how to make a paper dragon chain at a Second Saturdays R 4 Kids on Feb. 13 at the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums in Fremont.

The class is inspired by the Chinese New Year and is open-house style; kids between the ages of kindergarten through third grade (although any age is welcome) can stop in to the museum between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. that day. The class is free.

For more information, call 419-332-2081, email education coordinator Joan Eardly at jeardly@rbhayes.org, or visit rbhayes.org.

■ Handmade Toledo on Adams Street has a full slate of socially distanced, in-person classes on the schedule for the next two months, including workshops in crocheting, watercolor painting, and drawing.

The next class is one in how to make beads out of dried rose petals, with local artist Andrew Kimmey.

That class is from 2 to 3 p.m., Feb. 13.

For more information on all the courses, go to handmadetoledo.com/classes-workshops.

■ Alley Cat Arts Studio in Whitehouse has a series of art education Zoom classes that are open to the public, including an anemone drawing class from 6 to 8 p.m., Feb. 16.

To sign up for any of the classes, find Alley Cat Arts Studio on Facebook.
