Ahead of the Day of the Dead, which begins Oct. 31, the living are busy remembering their departed loved ones.
Members of the Hispanic community are displaying altars, known as ofrendas, with pictures and other keepsakes as part of a Mexican tradition to honor the dead.
In Toledo, the Sofia Quintero Art and Cultural Center is teaching the community about this tradition by hosting several of these memorial altars in the Old South End.
“It’s a celebration of life,” said Anita Sanchez-Serda, events and marketing coordinator for the center. “It’s celebrating our family members, friends that have passed and gone before us, and culturally it’s an opportunity to think about these individuals in our lives and what they meant to us, and honor them.”
