It’s time for MacQueen Orchards’ Apple Stir and Crafts Festival from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at 7605 Garden Rd., Holland. This is the 38th year this favorite family business has welcomed guests to enjoy picking apples and so much more.
Foods include barbecue, funnel cakes, and doughnuts. There will be lots of entertainment, from barrel train rides to a petting zoo and pony rides, an arts and crafts show, and live music. And, of course, you can pick your own apples.
Don’t forget the Apple Pie Contest: First prize is $100, with second, third, and fourth places, respectively, winning $50, $30, and $20. Fifth and sixth place winners will each get a peck of apples. Registration for the contest is required by Friday.

Greek cooking classes
Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 740 Superior St., is hosting its popular Greek Cooking Class and Dinner Series in October.
On Oct. 8, learn to make shredded chicken in phyllo, cheese pastries, and galaktoboureko (custard phyllo rolls) with Phyllis Manton and Faye Haberman. The cost is $40.
For Oct. 15th’s class, Andreas and Maria Petros will teach how to prepare pork and chicken souvlaki, roasted potatoes, Greek-style vegetables, and tzatziki. The cost is also $40.
And on Oct. 22, chef George Kamalaris of Georgio’s will present My Greek Table: A four-course dinner paired with wine. The cost is $60.

Polish Harvest Festival
At 1 p.m. on Oct. 13, the Toledo-Poznan Alliance invites everyone to join them for a traditional Dozynki, or harvest festival, at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd. This year’s honoree is author/illustrator Catherine Katafiasz Macaro.
The menu is being prepared by Malczewski’s Catering and includes soup, fresh kielbasa, Wedding Chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet and sour cabbage, green bean casserole, a relish tray, dinner rolls, coffee cake, white or chocolate cake, and beverages (coffee, tea and water). The Otsego High School Choir will perform in both English and Polish.

Former White House chef at Hayes Home
As part of the American Presidents Film and Literary Festival at the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums, Spiegel Grove, Fremont, former White House chef John Moeller will offer cooking lessons at the historic Hayes Home on Saturday. Mr. Moeller served during the administrations of George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush.
Students can choose from two class times: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m. The sessions are open to all ages, but there are only 15 openings for each. The chef will teach participants to make a soup, an entrée, and a dessert, which will then be enjoyed in the dining room. Guests who are 21 and older will receive a complimentary glass of wine.
