All Crumbs Artisan Bakery has only been around for about five years, but it’s made quite the impact on Toledo in that short time.
Beautiful baked goods, obviously, are the claim to fame.
And not just simple standbys like cookies (although they definitely make some exceptional ones), but also distinctive items like delicate, flaky croissants and other coffee house pastries. Surprisingly, Old World-style knishes (a carb lovers’ fest of potato-stuffed bread), bialys (bagel-like dough topped with caramelized onions), and a fluffy, tender braided challah are also on the menu.
And all of these classic-meets-contemporary goodies are prepared with the same devoted dedication to detail.
We started with the $6 wild ramp focaccia, a seasonal specialty. All Crumbs keeps focaccia in the regular rotation; but the toppings change based upon what’s available at the Toledo Farmers’ Market, where they maintain a stand each week and get to schmooze with — and be inspired by — their fellow vendors.
The flavor of ramps is a bit like a mash-up of onion, leeks, and garlic. They make an exceptional topping for the crisp-chewy bread that can be eaten as an accompaniment to salad or soup, sliced horizontally for making sandwiches, or even just devoured on its own.
Next we sampled the $3 pretzel croissant, which established All Crumbs’ reputation quickly from the get-go.
Not only are the flaky laminated dough layers infused with butter, but they’re also infused with an abundance of love. This treat is simultaneously substantial, with its generous size and multiple twists, but also delicate and shatteringly crisp-tender with just the right hint of saltiness.
Because the bakers at All Crumbs are not only talented but are tremendously creative, as well as averse to waste, the leftover tidbits of toppings from the croissants are saved and salvaged.
They’re then mixed into the batter to make our next choice: Salty Almond Pretzelseed Cookies, for $3.
Sweet and salty, crispy and chewy, these dark cookies with an abundance of caramelized sugars hit all the right taste and texture notes.
And finally, even a four-pack of crisp-crusted, chewy bagels still comes in under our $10 Cheap Eats budget limit at $9.
We love the everything, but went for the parmesan-peppercorn variety this time (though the bacon and brown sugar was singing a Siren song of temptation). After clicking on this selection, the website asked if we’d like an optional sprinkling of coarse salt on top. Of course, we said! Saying “no” would be like refusing the whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry on top of a sundae: unthinkable.
So order from All Crumbs. No matter which goodies you get, we promise there will be no crumbs left behind.
